And of course there was the guest book. During my Payne Hollow summers I would thumb back through it, looking for my own name. The guest book is a revealing clue to Anna's personality: An educated, refined, city-dwelling woman moves with her husband to the primitive riverbank. The neighbors are of a sharply lower social class than her own. She must keep "house" in a squatters' shack and then a shantyboat. She washes clothes in river water and mops the mud off the floor each day. And into this markedly unconventional life she introduces the ritual of a formal guest book.

It was at least by 1948: "We are quite pleased" with how the washing went on November 23, Harlan wrote. " I wonder whether Anna asked him to help. Or could he simply not resist the allure of washday? At Payne Hollow, Harlan eventually made water more accessible by building cisterns near the house, but it was easier to go on washing blankets and woolens at the riverbank and rinsing them from the johnboat. " wrote Anna to friends, of such an operation one day in September 1982, when she was eighty.

While Harlan rounded up the chairs, I pushed the reading table into position facing the fireplace. The reading table, a low drop-leaf chest on casters, did quadruple duty as table, seating, storage, and support for the bed. Meanwhile Anna assembled the reading light, which consisted of two kerosene lamps and a holder Harlan had made for them, an H-shaped wooden stand slightly taller than it was wide. The shelf crosspiece of the H was just the right size to hold the lamps. With the lamps in place, two flat, rectangular reflector shades made of sturdy aluminum were affixed, one on each side, at a slanting angle.
