It is one of those cliches with the virtue of being true. ” He mowed, he raked, he pruned, he mended fences, he patched the roof, he even took time to answer my constant questions about what all of his tools in the shed did. And even when doing nothing, he did something—he whittled. The devil finds it hard to tempt men who whittle. Cancer hit, and Levi slowed down—doing everything he did before, but less of it. He stayed indoors more, and I grew accustomed to seeing his big straw hat on the hook by the door most of the time, while in the past it was more often on his head, outdoors.

In winter he grew bored and crabby. Somehow books and television did not seem as rewarding to him as work, even if he did complain about sweating under a hot southern sun. Cultures experience various swings of the pendulum. My grandfather’s generation honored people who worked hard. My generation honors people who play hard—or more accurately, who have money to spend on leisure. Perhaps there is a happy medium somewhere in there, but I think my grandfather—and Proverbs—was more on the right track.

And so should we. Our mouths are lethal weapons, yet there is no “tongue control” movement comparable to gun control. Thus we do much harm—to those we injure with our words, and to ourselves because we are so much less than God intends us to be. I fear this is a form of hypocrisy that we shrug off too easily, something the apostles sternly warned against: “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless” ( James 1:26). “Restrain[ing] the lips” is a nice phrase from Proverbs 10.
